It gives me great pleasure to welcome this first issue of the CSU News, an initiative that came out of discussions with CSU President, Professor Lance Jay Brown, and members of its Executive Committee last May.
I am equally pleased to note that CSU has now become CSU Global. This is an important step toward turning CSU Global into a truly professional organization with the goal of promoting sustainable urban development worldwide.
I wish to felicitate the CSU leadership for giving shape to and launching this powerful new instrument of seamless communication for the CSU’s global community across various regions.
In this age of instant social media interactions where photo posting and twittering seem to hold sway, it is important to recognize that there is still an inescapable need for more sober and more professional communication and exchange of ideas and information between communities of practice and professionals.
I have no doubt that our Newsletter will serve this essential purpose not only between architects and urban planners around the world engaged in building and planning sustainable urban communities, but also between them and all other stakeholders, including the United Nations community, business leaders, academia, civil society, the media, activists and advocates for sustainability and ordinary urban dwellers whose daily lives and futures are increasingly being affected by climate change and all kinds of pollution.
I call upon all members of the CSU global community and on all stakeholders to contribute positively to the CSU News and make the best use of it for regular communication and for mobilizing international support for sustainable urbanization.
Personally, it is especially heartening for me to see the CSU flourish and grow over the last ten years, as it was born as an offspring of the United Nations Global Alliance for ICT and Development (UNGAID) more than a decade ago when I was its Chairman. I will continue to engage with the CSU and will extend my support to it as it achieves even greater success in the years ahead.
