A UN Habitat – World Urban Campaign initiative at Columbia University, New York ,
This Urban Thinkers Campus (UTC) seeks to address the urgency of meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and how academia, the professions, civil society and governance can further help expedite action on the SDGs and their targets. How can we best meet the challenge of accelerating the SDGs in cities, in tandem with other sustainability agendas, and inspire each other on this path? In this UTC we will do this by generating actionable items, or Ideas for Action.
The goal of this cross sectoral event is to arrive at actionable items for all participants, and methodologies by which each participant can bring the urgency of action to their own networks. The aim is to focus attention in the four key areas while keeping in mind issues of intersectionality and environmental justice, with an awareness that younger people have most to lose and their ideas for action must be heard. Over two days, the UTC will offer keynotes, plenary panels and breakout sessions to enable participants to fully and critically engage with the SDGs. An underlying theme in the plenaries will be the question of localization. What does that mean? How do the SDGs relate to the Green New Deal? Academic, professional, civil society and governance participants are invited to join in this dialogue, share experience, knowledge, critical viewpoints, and ideas for action. The Ideas for Action generated over two days will be widely disseminated.
