On World Habitat Day 2010, Monday, 4 October, cities worldwide hosted programs on the 2010 Better City/ Better Life theme. The Better City/ Better Life theme highlighted our collective vision of a sustainable urban world that harnesses the potential and possibilities, mitigates inequalities and disparities, and provides a home for people of all cultures and ages, both rich and poor. (The Global Observance of World Habitat Day 2010 was held at the Shanghai World Expo 2010.)
At the United Nations Headquarters, UN-Habitat New York Office and the Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization joined to host a public event: “Better City, Better Life” concentrating on the following items:
- Establish the challenges of health and the quality of the built environment in relation to various typologies of urbanized areas;
- Solicit and evaluate best practices in terms of their applicability to these different situations; and
- Identify initiatives to design and apply innovative solutions for sustainable urbanization.
